Mayor Nicole Shirt

A recent email chain started by Hudson Councilwoman Nicole Kowalski about a post on Mayor Jeff Anzevino’s Facebook page provides insight on how Kowalski treats her colleagues. She also pivots her intended target in an attempt for her to avoid blame when her attack fell flat. In this case, she ends up pinning blame on a Hudson student for creating a Hudson Eclipse shirt.

At 1am on April 9th, Hudson Councilwoman Nicole Kowalski emailed City Manager Thom Sheridan and cc’d Mayor Jeff Anzevino about the Mayor’s eclipse shirt. The Mayor shared a picture of himself wearing an eclipse shirt on his Facebook page.

Perhaps the Mayor’s shirt was keeping Kowalski up late that night. As a public records request shows, she had an important question for the City Manager that apparently couldn’t wait until working hours. Kowalski wanted to know why she didn’t get a free shirt and rather than asking the Mayor about it, Kowalski emailed the City Manager in the middle of the night and cc’d Mayor Anzevino.

At 6:01am, Sheridan responded to Kowalski’s 1am email. Unbeknownst to Kowalski, Sheridan’s job responsibilities do not include handling the Mayor’s wardrobe. He advised her to speak with the Mayor directly.

Mayor Anzevino also replied to Kowalski. He pointed out that she did not need to include the City Manager on an email about the Mayor’s own shirt. He did not appreciate Kowalski’s lack of respect in how she addressed this. He mentioned he purchased the shirt from an entrepreneur who is Hudson student who appreciates astronomy.

Kowalski is not someone who takes being held accountable well, so she was sure to respond to the emails. She is currently suing the City of Hudson because she was censured by Council. She has racked up tens of thousands (or more) in legal bills for Hudson taxpayers because she is fighting what can be compared to pulling a red flag in kindergarten for misbehaving. To deflect blame for her lack of respect, Kowalski turned her attention to the student who created the shirt.

In a follow up email, Kowalski wrote that it is “problematic because people shouldn’t be using the City’s logo unauthorized” and the City “shouldn’t allow people to profit from using our logo.”

An additional email details how the Mayor contacted the father of the student to discuss Kowalski’s concerns about the City logo. But, he had already been notified as Kowalski reportedly had been discussing and gossiping about this with others.

While unauthorized use of the City logo and graphics is an important topic, Kowalski’s timing is suspicious. Before taking aim at the Hudson student, Kowalski did not object to State Representative Candidate Derrick Hall’s manipulation of and use of a City graphic for his campaign. Kowalski is a graphic designer who has endorsed Hall.

Maybe if the student gifted Kowalski a free shirt, the Councilwoman would have given the student a free pass like she did for her political ally Derrick Hall.
